Local products such as honey and garden photographs will also be displayed. Tour maps are available by donation on the first stop of the tour, the Heights Community Garden at 3897 Pender Street. The total estimated length of the tour is 2.75 hours walking, or 1.5 hours cycling. A bus and driver are also available to transport tour participants. This year’s tour steps out beyond the Heights into the surrounding neighbourhood to feature a local initiative that was originally inspired by Harvesting on the Heights 2012. This particular stop on the tour features 2 adjacent gardens that are intensively devoted to food production, including honey bees. The owners of these gardens have formed a network of honey producers, placing hives on urban lots in Burnaby and in East Vancouver. Their permaculture approach to gardening ensures that they have always have fresh food available. A resident potter will be showing her work at this site. “I am thrilled with the way that this tour has been an inspiration for others”, notes Diana Hall, President of the Heights Garden Society, “A little effort made in connecting with the community has great rewards for everyone”. The tour’s end features an afternoon tea and cooking demonstration by trained chef Antonietta. Antonietta has received a small neighborhood grant from the City of Burnaby to engage others in her Kitchen Conversations project. This connection will allow Burnaby residents to participate further, to share recipes and stories about food and their heritage. Attendees are encouraged to bring recipes and photographs. Contact information and scanning equipment will be provided. |
